Tips on How to Soothe a Fussy Newborn

6 Ways To Calm A Fussy Baby

If you’re a first time mom of a newborn, you’re pretty much in survival mode from the second you bring your baby home. You’re sleep deprived, you’re anxious, you’re sleep deprived, you’re confused, and did I mention, you’re sleep deprived? Newborns are naturally very fussy the first few months of their life. They have gas, they’re constipated, they’re constantly uncomfortable. But having a fussy baby doesn’t mean there’s no hope for you both, here are some of our favorite ways to relieve some of the symptoms the baby is feeling.

Gripe Water:

Oh the tried and true Gripe water. This is one of the most recommended products by pediatricians and once you use it, you’ll know why. The herbs (fennel, ginger, chamomile, clove, dill, lemon balm and peppermint) in gripe water help with digestion and the remedy is thought to help babies with colic. It can also be used for teething pain and hiccups. One thing to be aware of is the brand you choose. Some brands will claim their product is “all natural” or “homeopathic” but they’ll add additional ingredients that aren’t exactly safe for babies. It’s best to ask your pediatrician if you're on the fence about it.

Probiotic Drops:

Probiotic drops are a great way to help fussy babies get some relief. It boosts good bacteria, balances out the different types of bacteria in your body, decreases symptoms of IBS, and prevents excessive diarrhea caused some infection. Bonus: go for one with camomile in it as well. Just like Gripe Water, it’s best to ask your pediatrician before you use it, mostly because probiotics are not regulated by the FDA, and you should always be cautious before introducing new supplements to your newborn.

Windi:

The Windi is another genius product from the smarty pants over at Frieda Baby. It’s a single use catether that helps babies get rid of built up gas. It’s safe to use, so don’t freak out about using it, as long as you follow the instructions. You can use it up to 3x a day to help your baby relieve gas and feel better. Warning: Never leave the Windi in your baby and always use oil on the tip. Discard after each use.

Happy Tummi Waistband for Colic Relief:

Happy Tummi is a herbal waistband that has lavender, camomile, lemon grass, peppermint and flax seed in it. You heat it up for 15-20 seconds and the herbs get activated and release heeling properties. It’s great for babies who have colic, gas, constipation, cramps and bloating. It’s similar to what you would use as a woman to relieve PMS cramping, but its safe for babies.

Baby Wrap:

Having your baby wrapped close to you, tummy to tummy, in the upright position will help soothe some of her colic symptoms. The natural position and the alignment helps baby’s center of gravity shift and helps give them some relief.

The DockATot:

The DockATot is one of the most genius baby products, it’s essentially a mobile bassinet or lounger, but it provides the baby with a safe, snug space to sleep. Sometimes newborns struggle with having too much open space, and it can be overwhelming. One tried and true method is to swaddle your newborn in the Snugababe Swaddle, then put them in the DockATot for their nap.
