If you're reading this at 2 a.m., I see you
Three days ago she was sleeping a 6-hour stretch. Tonight she has been up every 45 minutes. You haven't changed a thing. Welcome to the 4-month sleep regression — and I'm sorry, but also: this is one of the most NORMAL things that will happen in your first year.
What's actually happening (this part helped me)
Around 4 months your baby's brain matures and her sleep cycles permanently shift to look more like an adult's. She now moves through light and deep sleep with brief wake-ups between cycles, the way you and I do. The difference is, you and I roll over and go back to sleep. She doesn't know how to do that yet. So she fully wakes up.
It's not really a regression, it's a progression
I hate the word 'regression' here. Nothing has gone backwards. Her brain is leveling up. The skill she needs now — independent sleep onset — is one we have to gently teach. This is normal developmental science, not something you did wrong.
What worked in our house
One: a tight, predictable wind-down routine. Bath, sleep sack, lights low, one song, in the crib drowsy but awake. Two: an arms-out sleep sack (this is a great age for the One & Done — she needs her hands to self-soothe). Three: a 5- to 10-minute pause before I responded to a wake-up, because half the time she resettled before I made it to her door. Four: blackout curtains. Worth every dollar.
What NOT to do, per AAP
Do not put her in your bed (the AAP's bed-sharing guidance does not flex during regressions). Do not prop the bottle. Do not roll her onto her stomach to 'help her sleep deeper.' Do not start solids early to fill her up — the AAP is firm that solids begin around 6 months, not before, and earlier solids don't actually fix the sleep.
How long does it last?
Honestly? 2 to 6 weeks. With Alana we were through it in about 10 days because we held the routine tight. With Ayah it took closer to a month because, well, first kid, we were figuring it out. Either way: temporary. You will sleep again. Caffeine and a tight routine. We've got this.
